Upshaw should plug DeLamielleure's (pie) hole

Gene Upshaw and Joe DeLamielleure agree on one thing. They don’t like each other much.

In response to DeLamielleure’s outspoken criticism of Upshaw’s handling of NFL Players Association pensions, Upshaw was quoted by the AP as saying, "A guy like DeLamielleure says the things he said about me; you think I'm going to invite him to dinner? No. I'm going to break his ... damn neck.”

DeLamielleure takes the “I’m the innocent good guy” approach, who could be snapped in two by the former Raiders great.

"He is the head of a union. He has the wherewithal to do it," DeLamielleure said Tuesday.

Give me a break. Nobody is buying that. DeLamielleure has taken offense to the treatment of retired veterans by the NFL Players Association, and he’s singled out union boss Upshaw as the scapegoat.

What I find amusing is that a Hall of Fame player, who played in countless Pro-Bowls and many more seasons in the NFL can’t keep his own house in order. DeLamielleure is upset because he feels that NFL pensions aren’t what they should be.

This is a former professional athlete whining about a pension plan. DeLamielleure needs to spend a little time here on planet earth, where 99.99% of the worlds population don’t make NFL salaries.

Perhaps DeLamielleure’s argument is that he’s been unable to manage his own money because of all the head slaps he took as part of a porous Buffalo offensive line in the 70’s. Taking it out on Upshaw is down right laughable.

The Raiders Hall-of-Famer has done more for NFL players in his tenure as the head of the NFLPA, than any other person in the role. He has kept labor strife out of the game by negotiating contracts that have worked both players as well as the league.

The fact that players that collected fat paychecks in their hay day, now require pensions is a joke in itself. If DeLamielleure was in fact a union guy, he’d make sure the guys that made a pittance collect a pension. Distributing it to former upper echelon players who cashed in back in the day is just plain disgusting.

He's black, he's got power, he's a Raider, that scares the s*** out of society.

Do a little research about salaries of the players in the past. They were not like now. Not even close. Just because Upshaw was a great Raider doesn't mean you should drink the silver & black kool aid. Many older veterans can't move due to the pounding they received building the game into what it has become today. This includes MANY of Mr. Upshaws brothers in combat. The NFL is guaranteed income of 24 BILLION $ that is $24,000,000,000.00 over just the next 8 years. Where does greed end? At least they should take care of the medical issues of former players. i proudly wear my 1980 Super Bowl ring but i am truly disappointed in the leagues view of former players. Get educated my friend.

"The fact that players that collected fat paychecks in their hay day, now require pensions is a joke in itself"... get a clue, you've got NO idea what you are talking about... players salaries in the 70's and for most even into the early 80's were VERY LOW... most players HAD to have TWO or more jobs just to make ends meet because the football salary on its own could not raise an average family back then... many old Raiders Greats were Roofers, Electricians, Building Contractors in the off season... lets face it, the NFL is a multi-billion dollar industry and its a joke how the greats who built the sport, who are now crippled and afflicted have been ignored... but its not just Upshaw's fault, thats where I disagree with Joe D

I agree with the two other comments. You have no frigg'n clue what you're writing about.

Now that Marco Rivera has come out with the same concerns, as has Viking center Birk with, it's no longer just about the old guys and how they should just shut the bleep up.

Upshaw is going to be getting his ass in some real hot water very soon...and rightfully so.

I'm a die hard Raider...since '76...and I've respected Upshaw during his playing days...but this is a joke. In addition, the higher salaries given to today players have nothing to do with what Upshaw has done...or very little. It's about TV revenues.

Someone needs to shut Upshaws pie hole...or break his neck...

I like your blog but I'm afraid your way off base this time. I admire Upshaw's HOF career as a player BUT

(1) his comment about "breaking Joe D's neck" is totally inappropriate, unprofessional, and deplorable.

(2) There is so much more that Upshaw could do for the retired players who have fallen on hard times.
